가정식 백반 is a local Korean restaurant in the village of Bongpori outside of Sokcho. I randomly picked this restaurant because . . . well, I was on a hunt for a bibimbap place, but I didn’t see any. After walking around and seeing my options, I decided to have some kimchi jjigae (kimchi stew), and I saw this place and decided to give it a try. I entered the place and I saw that it’s a sit-down-on-the-floor restaurant. From what I gathered, it seemed like a popular local hangout, as I was right next to a table of ahjummas enjoying their meal and drinks!
After I chose my table, I ordered my meal for 7,000 won. Other meal options here are dwoenjang jjigae (soybean stew), yukgaejang (spicy beef stew), or galbitang (beef short ribs soup) for 7,000 won each. Osam bulgogi (spicy squid and pork bulgogi), jaeyook bokkeum (stir-fried spicy pork), or ojingeo bokkeum (stir-fried spicy squid) cost 10,000 won per person. The more expensive options are agu jjim (braised spicy angler), which is 30,000 won for a small and 35,000 won for a large, and myeongtae jjim (steamed/braised pollack), which is 25,000 won for a small and 30,000 won for a large. For drinks they have soju and beer for 3,000 won each, and there are sodas for 1,000 won each. They also sell extra rice for 1,000 won.
My kimchi jjigae was hearty and had a home-made flavour to it. It was spicy, but not to the point where I couldn’t handle it. The banchans were okay. I liked the mushroom one the best. The kimchi tasted kind of strange to me, like it was made of wasabi. I was told that certain jeotgal (salted fermented food ingredient in kimchi) may give off that flavour. I can’t say I was fond of it. I did enjoy my meal, though, but it wasn’t anything special. I don’t know if I’d return to this place, but I can say that I did like the ahjumma who ran the place. She was a nice lady.

This is on the main drag along the coast, and it’s about a ten-minute bus ride (on 1 or 1-1) from Sokcho Intercity Bus Terminal. After you get off at the bus stop named “Bongpori”, facing the sea, walk down on your right and Gajeongsik Baekban will be across the street. If you’ve reached a CU Mart, then you’ve gone too far.
7,000 ~ 35,000+ won budget per person
